One in the Spirit

1 John 3: 11-18

We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.”

1 John 3:14

While Peter Scholtes was parish priest at St. Brendan’s Church on the South Side of Chicago in the 1960s, he began leading a youth choir in the church basement. America was being torn apart by racial and cultural divisions, and Scholtes wanted to teach his kids about the unifying power of Christian love. When he couldn’t find the right song, he wrote one himself, in a single day. It became one of the earliest praise songs of the Jesus Movement: “We are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord. And we pray that all unity may one day be restored. And they’ll know we are Christians by our love.”

According to 1 John, if we are true Christians who have genuinely trusted Christ as our Savior, the evidence will be in our love for others. John wrote, “We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love his brother abides in death.”

A point to ponder…

When we supernaturally love others, and display a steadfast faith in God, we show evidence of being a child of God. They will know we’re Christians by our love.
