Read and Mark
Psalm 119: 127-130
“The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.”
Okay, you want to begin studying God’s Word, but you don’t know how to begin. Try the read and mark method. Find a newer version of the Bible and a pencil. Open to a manageable book, like Matthew, Philippians, or Proverbs. Ask the Lord to speak to you, then read the first paragraph. Look for something to underline, circle, or highlight. Read the next paragraph and do the same. Is there a truth to learn? A promise to claim? A prayer to echo? A command to obey?
If a verse confuses you, put a question mark by it. If it thrills you, use an exclamation mark. If you find a verse to memorize, circle it and spend time working on it, word by word. When you finish a book, go to another.
If you have a study Bible, the notes will help you understand the text. Don’t grow discouraged. The more you study, the more you learn; the more you learn, the more you’ll want to read—and mark.
A point to ponder…
I have carried one Bible with me a great many years. It is worth a good deal to me, and I will tell you why: I have so many passages marked in it.
