The Virus of Sin

Psalm 24: 3-5

Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.”

Everyone remembers the epidemic of the Ebola virus in West Africa from 2013 to 2016. Some of the most memorable images are of the medical workers dressed in their protective gear from head to toe. They were so tightly sealed inside their suits that they could only work for short periods of time because of the stifling heat. But when fighting a virus like Ebola, good intentions are not enough. You can’t want to protect yourself; you have to protect yourself. It’s a matter of life and death.

Which is more powerful—a deadly virus or sin? Since deadly viruses are usually contained and sin is still rampant, it looks like sin is more powerful. So how much more careful should we be to avoid infection? Yes, Christ has delivered us from the penalty of sin, but He also made provision for protection from the power of sin. Yet resisting the power of sin is a daily battle. Jesus didn’t commend those who hunger for holiness; He commended those who are holy—who willingly choose a life of purity. Those are the ones who will ultimately see God (Psalm 51:7; Isaiah 6:5; Revelation 22:4).

Live your life clothed with the armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-18)—your first line of defense against the power of sin.
